Streamed live on Jun 1, 2016The Gotthard Base Tunnel, the longest and deepest tunnel in the world, is due to officially open in Erstfeld at a ceremony on Wednesday, June 1. The tunnel, which has been under construction for the past 17 years, will be 57 km long and will allow trains to travels up to 250kmh, dividing travel time by half between Zurich and Milan, to two and a half hours.
Switzerland's independence and neutrality have long been honored by the major European powers and Switzerland was not involved in either of the two World Wars. The country did not officially become a UN member. Switzerland remains active in many UN and international organizations, but retains a strong commitment to neutrality. Switzerland can be a glorious whirlwind trip whether you've packed your hiking boots, snowboard, or just a good book and a pair of sunglasses.
