Known formally as Persia until 1935, Iran became an
Islamic republic in 1979 after the ruling Shah was forced into exile.
Iran has a well developed transportation network. The main airlines are Iran Air and Mahan Air providing flights to numerous destinations at friendly prices. Because of the international embargo that affects cross-border transactions, you cannot buy domestic tickets from anywhere. Buses are very fast everywhere. There are two types of cars – old coaches Irannational and new, modern, mostly Volvo coaches. The Volvos cost more, but they are still relatively cheap (about 3 euro for a 250 km journey).
There is an international embargo of fund transfers to and from Iran. Although you see plenty of ATMs in Tehran or Mashad, you cannot use them. So here you must come with cash. The dollar seems like a favorite but euro is ok too, they change it to the correct rate. Exchange rate today is 1 euro = 15,000 rials (local name Toman, 1 Toman is equal to 10 rials, quite confusing because some prices are in Toman,).
