Nagorno-Karabakh is a landlocked region in the South Caucasus.
On December 10, 1991, as the Soviet Union was collapsing, a referendum was held in the NKAO and the neighbouring Shahumian region. The overwhelming majority of residents voted for independence from Azerbaijan and the establishment of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic but the country remains unrecognised by any UN member. According to the US Department of State's travel warning: "As a result of continuing conflict, travelers are cautioned to avoid travel to the region of Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding occupied areas." In spite of that warning, thousands of American and European tourists visit Nagorno Karabakh every year.
